Consumer stocks drive the market higher

Our favored Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) has been marching strongly upward, along with the small-cap Russell 2000, breaking to new highs and continuing to find buyers.  Unlike 2017, however, this market strength is not so broad-based.  International stocks have been flat, with the rising U.S. dollar keeping the pressure on those indexes.

This week we bring you a revisit to a prior article from January 2017. Recall that in January 2017 we were in the early days of the new Trump administration. Stocks had popped higher on expectations for a more business-friendly government (and later continued higher on a surge in corporate earnings and a rare (and brief?) period of synchronized global economic growth). Over the past year, there have been numerous articles telling us that the U.S. economy is entering the “late-cycle” phase, a period of about 18 months characterized by rising inflation (and therefore rising interest rates), higher commodity prices, and positive though waning economic growth. (more…)
