Market Rally Continues To Broaden – A Very Positive Sign

The hallmark of a strong market rally is sector rotation. Over the past couple of months, we have seen just such rotation as the rally baton gets passed from one sector to another, then back again. After months of leadership from the Magnificent Seven tech/consumer stocks, this summer saw the rally baton passed to almost all the other market sectors – everything from industrials to typically defensive consumer staples stocks found buyers.

Has Peak Earnings Growth Meant Peak Stock Market?

“In what shaped up to be a very impressive first half of the year for both the economy and stock market, stellar earnings growth has been a key ingredient. Coming off stronger-than-expected S&P 500 earnings growth of 53% (year over year) in the first quarter, second-quarter earnings are currently anticipated to grow by 78%, the highest since 2009. Stocks in the U.S. have come roaring back from the weakness of one month ago, returning to the doorstep of new high ground. Lost in the enthusiasm about new highs, however, is the fact that fully half of the stock market has been treading water for almost two years now. If that lagging half of the market were to break through, stocks would be in a position to substantially rally. (more…)
