We found this opinion piece from Merryn Somerset Webb to be interesting as we turn our attention to 2023 projections. Ms. Webb writes for the Financial Times, among many other publications. Her commentary below obviously refers much to her home country of the UK. But many, if not most, of her observations apply globally. Of course, our models are agnostic to economic trends such as those discussed here. Has Peak Earnings Growth Meant Peak Stock Market?

Below is an article from Schwab on the connection between earnings and the stock market.

“In what shaped up to be a very impressive first half of the year for both the economy and stock market, stellar earnings growth has been a key ingredient. Coming off stronger-than-expected S&P 500 earnings growth of 53% (year over year) in the first quarter, second-quarter earnings are currently anticipated to grow by 78%, the highest since 2009. Uncertainty in the Market

The stock market continues to hold on through intermittent bouts of selling. Corporate earnings have been record-setting in their growth from year-ago levels, severely depressed though they were. Despite outrageously good earnings for the top growth stocks in the Nasdaq, investors continue to shift money to cyclical value sectors like energy, finance, materials. The lackluster response to the hotshot earnings has led to some heavy down days in the market recently. (more…)

Stocks in the U.S. have come roaring back from the weakness of one month ago, returning to the doorstep of new high ground. Lost in the enthusiasm about new highs, however, is the fact that fully half of the stock market has been treading water for almost two years now. If that lagging half of the market were to break through, stocks would be in a position to substantially rally. (more…)

The bullish case for stocks rests on surging corporate earnings.  The bearish case rests on fears of rising interest rates, uncertainty about trade policy, and a general hangover from a very strong 2017.  Early on in the quarterly earnings cycle, companies are providing the strong results.
